For example, let’s imagine that our hypothetical NYC waiter or waitress was instead pursuing a career in public relations.
Seasoned waiters or waitresses are highly likely to have many of the crucial human skills sought for public relations specialists in New York, like communication and attention to detail. They just need to advertise them.
And when it comes to hard skills specifically, looking at areas where demand for a skill outstrips available supply can illuminate crucial, attainable skills that can help transitioning workers get a foot in the door.
In this case, it’s analytics: it’s one of the only skills where demand outstrips the current supply, and a number of affordable certifications are currently available online. Leveraging skills data allows a restaurant worker to make a transition aligned with both their future goals and current skill set, rather than simply taking the path of least resistance.
