Our clients have done some great work around regional skills development (see two examples here and here from the EMSI case study archive), and there are other organizations creating worthwhile initiatives and programs. One such group is the National Network of Sector Partners, run by the Insight Center for Community Economic Development.
NNSP has started this YouTube channel on regional, industry-driven workforce partnerships. There are some good conversations from workforce development professionals from all over the US in the videos. Here’s a nice example:
Along similar lines, Julian Alssid of the Workforce Strategy Center recently wrote this piece on the so-called skills recession. He concludes it this way: “What we need is to make our workforce development programs more demand-driven, and our education system more supportive of this effort. There is a need to focus on high-level skills training for career track jobs that exist now and in the foreseeable future.”
