Economic headlines were dominated by stimulus spending, which was praised for going in the right direction by most commentators. The Atlantic Wire collected a number of reactions here.
Back in mid-August, Narayana Kocherlakota (the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis), introduced the term “mismatch” in terms of the kind of workers employers want vs. the kind of workers available (i.e. “Firms have jobs, but can’t find appropriate workers. The workers want to work, but can’t find appropriate jobs.”). He went on to say that most of current unemployment represents mismatch, and that current unemployment was “not readily amenable to monetary policy.”
This week, Daniel Gros talked about the “Skills Deficit,” and brought up the mismatch between the skills sought by the export-driving industries, and the skills present in the US workforce.
