How does Lightcast define a skill?
Hypervisor

A hypervisor is a software layer that enables virtualization, allowing multiple operating systems to be run on a single physical machine. It creates virtualized environments, called virtual machines (VMs), which function just like independent physical machines. This technology is commonly used in cloud computing and server virtualization to enhance server utilization, reduce hardware costs and improve flexibility. There are two types of hypervisor: Type 1 or bare-metal hypervisor runs directly on the host's hardware, while Type 2 or hosted hypervisor runs on a host operating system.

Kernel-Based Virtual Machine (KVM) is an open-source virtualization technology for Linux that allows multiple guest operating systems to run on a single host machine. It is based on the Linux kernel and uses hardware virtualization features to provide efficient and secure virtualization. KVM can be used for server consolidation, cloud computing, and dev/test environments, among other applications. KVM requires deep knowledge of Linux kernel internals, virtualization technology, and system administration skills.

A Linux distribution is a complete operating system that combines the Linux kernel with other software and applications. These distributions are pre-configured and optimized for specific purposes, such as desktop use, server use, or security-focused use. Some popular Linux distributions include Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and Red Hat. Knowledge of Linux distributions is important for system administrators, developers, and anyone working with Linux-based systems.

Network File Systems (NFS) is a distributed file system protocol that allows clients to access files and directories over a network in a transparent manner. It enables multiple computers to share resources and communicate with each other. NFS is commonly used in Unix and Linux environments, and requires a solid understanding of networking concepts, operating system administration, and software installation and configuration. Some key skills related to NFS include configuration, management, troubleshooting, security, and performance optimization.

Virtualization refers to the creation of a virtual version of physical computing resources, such as servers, storage devices, and networks. This skill involves the use of software to simulate hardware functionality, allowing multiple operating systems and applications to run on a single physical machine. Knowledge of Virtualization is used to optimize resource allocation, improve system efficiency, and enhance scalability in IT environments by enabling the consolidation of workloads and simplifying management tasks.
