But how fast has this role grown? What skills does a Forward Deployed Engineer need? And how is the role different from that of a Software Engineer?

Demand for Forward Deployed Engineers exploded in 2025 and has only grown more dramatically in 2026.
The number of job postings in the US market rose from approximately 200 in 2024 to around 1,200 in 2025 - a sixfold increase. More than 5,200 postings appeared in the first seven months of 2026 alone, already more than four times the total recorded across the whole of 2025.

How is a Forward Deployed Engineer different from a Software Engineer?
Forward Deployed Engineers and Software Engineers share a strong technical foundation, but their priorities differ.
Software engineering and communication are among the most common skills in both roles. Beyond those foundations, however, three of their five most frequently requested skills are different.
Forward Deployed Engineer postings place greater emphasis on Artificial intelligence, Workflow management and Python. AI and workflow management do not appear among the top 20 skills requested of Software Engineers, while Python ranks sixth rather than within the top five.
Traditional Software Engineer postings place more emphasis on Computer science, Agile methodology and Software development. Computer science falls from the second most frequently requested skill for Software Engineers to sixth for Forward Deployed Engineers. Agile methodology and software development - both among the five leading skills for Software Engineers - do not appear in the Forward Deployed Engineer top 20 at all.
The distinction is not that one role is technical and the other is not. Both require strong engineering capabilities. The difference lies in how those capabilities are applied: Software Engineers generally focus on building software, while Forward Deployed Engineers combine engineering with AI implementation, workflow design and direct customer problem solving.
The rise of the Forward Deployed Engineer signals a broader change in the AI labour market.
As businesses move from developing AI technology to applying it, they need professionals who can bridge the gap between technical products and operational problems. Forward Deployed Engineers occupy that space: they combine AI and engineering expertise with the ability to work directly with customers and redesign workflows.
Demand remains small compared with established technology occupations, but its rate of growth is striking. For employers, educators and technology professionals trying to anticipate where AI jobs are heading next, Forward Deployed Engineering is a role worth watching.
