About Skills UK

Shortly after the general election in July 2024, the incoming Labour government announced the creation of a new body – Skills England – to transform the skills system in England. With an overall mission of bringing together key partners to meet the skills needs of the next decade, Skills England’s remit includes providing an authoritative assessment of national and regional skills needs in the economy now and in the future; ensuring that training, technical qualifications, and apprenticeships are aligned with the needs of the labour market; and working with both Combined Authorities and regional organisations to ensure that regional and national skills needs are met and are in line with the new Industrial Strategy. Ultimately, the creation of the new body is key to the government’s mission to drive growth across the country, supporting people to get better jobs and improve their standard of living.

To be successful, Skills England will need to make use of the best and most granular skills insights available today. With our world-leading Open Skills Library containing more than 32,000 skills terms used in today’s labour market, and our Skills Taxonomy of 32 categories and 400 subcategories, we are uniquely positioned to provide these sorts of insights. This page demonstrates some of these capabilities, using as examples the four sectors identified by Skills England as being critical to future economic success: Digital technologies; Green workforce; Life sciences; Housebuilding and Construction. Not wishing to exclude the rest of the UK, we’ve included data for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as England.  Excitingly, all the data shown on this page, plus much, much more, is available on our Analyst platform.
