The new internship filter in Analyst gives you a quick and easy way to identify the occupations, employers, and job roles that offer the most internship opportunities for your students, while also highlighting the skills that will help students compete for those critical opportunities. It’s a powerful new tool for understanding regional labor market trends that affect students now, not just when they graduate.
To be competitive in the job market, students depend on getting real-world experience before they graduate, often in the form of an internship. Many students rely on career services to help them find and navigate these internship opportunities. And yet, the stark reality of today’s education-work landscape is that internship opportunities have fallen dramatically.
So how do you find the internships that are out there?
To help, Emsi has added an “Intern” filter to two key reports in Analyst: Job Posting Analytics and the Job Postings Table. This will allow you to identify internship opportunities that are collected as part of our aggregate job postings data. Like all job postings data in Analyst, it’s not a job board, but rather a tool to explore and analyze the internship opportunities that employers are offering.
With the “Intern” filter in Analyst Job Postings, you’ll be able to:
Identify which industries, occupations, and employers offer the most internship opportunities in your region
Understand the types of roles for which employers are offering internships, and see the top skills required for those positions
See how frequently particular skills appear in internship postings
Track changes in posting frequency over time
View sample internship postings
Using Analyst to Identify Internship Opportunities
Let’s walk through an example. Say you’re looking to find out what internship opportunities are available in the Seattle area.
From the Analyst home page, navigate to Job Postings > Job Posting Analytics.
Filter Analyst’s Job Posting Analytics report to find internship opportunities
Before running the report, you’ll be prompted to input Location, Occupation, or other relevant information. For a broad overview of internships, leave the occupation field blank. To explore a specific field, enter an occupation (or other criteria) to narrow your search results.
When the results load, add the “Intern” filter in the Part-Time/Full-Time section of the sidebar (scroll down if you don’t see it at first).
Don’t forget to adjust the Timeframe, too, to ensure you are looking at relevant postings.
Now, you can explore the Job Postings Overview, look at a map of a Regional Breakdown, explore Who’s Hiring, and learn about In-Demand Skills.
Use the new “Intern” filter to show the skills sought by employers
From this overview in Job Posting Analytics, you can jump to more detailed reports (such as those in the Job Postings Table) for even more detail on job titles, industries, companies, and skills.
With the data in these reports, you’ll be able to identify viable internship opportunities and guide students to those that will best fit their needs.
Creating New Connections with Employers and Alumni
However, it may be that some internships that you hope for don’t actually exist. If this is the case, Analyst’s job postings data can help you get creative.
Use Analyst’s Job Postings Table to identify companies offering internships
For example, you could search the Job Postings Table for employers who are not hiring—and reach out to them to propose new opportunities. Some employers are looking to close workforce equity gaps, so a collaboration could be mutually beneficial.
In fact, if you’re willing to cross-reference that list of non-hiring employers to a Profile Analytics report, you could find alumni who are already working at those companies. Then, you have a common connection with people who may be open to creating internships or mentoring opportunities for your students.
