Trending Tech Tuesday: MXNet

Welcome to the 16th installment of Trending Tech Tuesday, our weekly look at the trending tech skills in Emsi’s job postings data. Last week, we talked about Jupyter. Today, we’ll talk about MXNet, the deep learning framework of choice at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

12-month growth rate in job postings for MXNet: 159%

What is MXNet?

MXNet is an open source deep learning framework. Deep learning is an application of machine learning where the models essentially teach themselves, rather than relying on a human to step in and make adjustments. MXNet is currently “incubating” as part of the Apache Software Foundation. But it was announced in late 2016 that it had become the deep learning framework of choice at AWS, largely due to its scalability. If run across multiple processors, there are nearly linear gains in performance. Its ease-of-use and ability to run on various smaller devices are also contributing to its growing popularity.

MXNet skills gap: 1,728 people

Now, let’s look at the MXNet skills gap. During the last 12 months, we found 1,792 job postings requiring MXNet. But only 64 professionals currently listed MXNet as a skill on their professional profile or resume. That means over the last year, there have been 1,728 more jobs requiring MXNet than there are professionals with the skill.

We’re seeing more and more applications of deep learning. Wired describes deep learning as “the rocket fuel of the current AI boom.” With that growth, expect to see more deep learning jobs asking for MXNet.
